Greg passed. I'm passing this along.

Dear Friends,

It is with deepest regret that I must tell you that my husband, Greg Shaw, passed away in the hospital Tuesday night.

Greg had a vibrant spirit, but his physical health was always fragile. Last week, for reasons that are unclear, he developed an extremely high blood sugar and was rushed to the hospital. The level of blood sugar was so high that all of Greg’s vital functions were subjected to trauma, and he developed complications as a result. Nevertheless, for several days he remained in stable condition. He was conscious the entire time, and his doctors were quite optimistic that he would recover. Sadly and shockingly, he went into cardiac arrest on Tuesday night around 11:30pm. The wonderful people at the hospital worked for a long time to try and save him, and Greg fought very hard too. He was tenacious to the end.

Greg was given the very best care, and during his stay in the hospital he had the constant love and support of his family. His passing was not gentle, but I am comforted by the feeling that he is now at peace and free of all pain.

Tristan and I are grateful for the sympathy and support we have already received, and we ask for your prayers for Greg and for us throughout this difficult time. We also send our condolences to everyone who is sharing our grief.

Very best wishes to all of you,

Phoebe Shaw

My friends Mari (bomp chick supreme) and Ginny and I decided to take the trek down to PDX to see the Black Lips. Hooked up with lots of new friends...hi Stasia! And managed also to bomp into our fellow Seattleite, Nadine....the club, the dunes, is a tiny little place. We kept walking to the back and realized that the club was half the size we thought it was due to a strategic mirror. Anyhow, the boys put on a raucous show. The crowd was nutty. I had to stay in the back as I almost fell off my high heels being pushed about-all good fun though. Cole, the guitarist was wearing a sequined top a la good girls that I admired a lot. The next day we hit some thrifts on the way back to Seattle, and I found him another cool top to rival his other. Bea Arthur would be envious. I think it would be a cool tradition for folk to bring Cole one of these shirts at each of their shows. The Black Lips played The Funhouse with Tractor Sex Fatality, the Chromatics and headliners Veronica Lip Gloss from SF. Again the show was amazing...kind of what I imagine seeing the Sonics was like in 65. Raw. Passionate......these youngins have soul!!!!A highlight was Cole vomiting on Kelly O from the Stranger who was videoing the show. I later saw a clip of it and I thought I was going to bust a gasket. We want to make a puke loop! Next day I was lucky enough to be the band's tour guide as it was an uncommonly beautiful day in Seattle. No rain in March??? We trekked down to the Pike Market and took some very cool pix! I would love to hear from everyone about any other Black Lips exploits while they're on tour...thanks!

Howard Stern Embraces Bomp Philosophy!

Like him or not, right now Howard Stern is perhaps the most influential voice in America that is telling the naked truth about how the Bush Administration's Taliban-like suppression of our rights and freedoms (he's currently being driven off the air, and is not afraid to tell his huge audience why) is the worst thing that ever happened to this country.

Making reference to Korn's new video, he connects the political repression by the increasingly unregulated growth of ruthless corporations. Which is, in fact, exactly why I've been saying since the '70s that only indie labels can offer an alternative to soulless "corporate rock". That's what Bomp stood for then, and still does.

I didn't come here to boast. I've written many editorials on the subject but now it can be seen as near the center of the "culture war" that is engulfing the US.

Check this story:

During the verbal tongue lashing Howard Stern was giving the FCC and many others this morning, he took time out to praise KoRn's new video for "Y'All Want A Single," from their current platinum-selling album Take a Look in the Mirror.

"It’s probably the most inspirational, the most spectacular understanding of what’s going on in this country right now," raved Stern. "I believe that young people – I’m talking about people 18, 16, 20 – are freaking out right now because of what is going on with the religious right. They are angry. They are angry about the corporations running the music business. They are angry with the radio business. They are angry. And this Korn video, if you can get your hands on it, is the best music video I have ever seen."

The video shows the members of KoRn smashing up the inside of a brick-and-mortar record chain while thought-provoking truths about the big business of music flash up on the screen. Shot at an out-of-business Los Angeles record store, the enraged band storm through the aisles, violently smashing more than 20,000 CDs and display cases with crowbars. Fans join the frenzy as windows are broken and the store is ultimately destroyed. Interspersed with the band footage are statements questioning the practices of the music industry.

"One corporation owns the 5 major video channels in the U.S."

"98% of bands signed to a major don't make a profit."

"Two radio conglomerates control 42% of listeners."

"The music industry releases 100 songs per week."

"Only 4 songs are added to the average radio playlist each week."

"Hit songs on Top 40 are often repeated over 100 times per week (per station)."

"Is that all you want to hear?"

"90% of all singles get to the 'hook' within 20 seconds."

"98% of all #1 singles are less than 3:30 seconds long."

"Does this seem like a formula to you?"
---------------
